Ferda Ice Breaker cover: the Ferda Hockey shield bursting out of shattering ice

Connor McDavid scored 50 seconds into Sunday's game at Madison Square Garden and never let the Rangers forget it. That's 15 games and 15 games with a point, by our count, and 39 points along the way. The Room's locks for the week are in the Ferda Room, including the whole Kucherov and Larkin mess.

Five games on a Sunday afternoon and evening, every one of them decided in regulation. Anaheim had the best comeback, Carolina had the best goalie, and Winnipeg had the worst night.

Ducks 6, Senators 3

Ottawa led 3-0 after Philip Tomasino, Claude Giroux and Michael Amadio scored in the first. Then Anaheim scored the last six. Cutter Gauthier had a hat trick, two of them on the power play 36 seconds apart early in the third. Judd Caulfield added two and Leo Carlsson set up three.

Sully's chirp: Ottawa led 3-0 and gave up four power-play goals. That's not a penalty kill, that's a revolving door with a logo on it.

Hurricanes 7, Jets 0

Sean Walker opened it shorthanded and scored again in a second period where Carolina put up four goals in 7:14. Stuart Skinner was pulled after 17 shots and five goals. Pyotr Kochetkov made 26 saves for his second shutout of the season.

Lind's read: Carolina is 4-0-1 in its last five with a plus-13 goal differential, per NHL data. Winnipeg is 0-5 and minus-17 over the same stretch. That's not a slump anymore. That's a trend line, and Skinner's .864 over his last five starts is a big part of it.

Oilers 4, Rangers 1

McDavid scored early, Colton Dach scored twice and Evan Bouchard had a goal and two assists. Matt Tomkins, in his first start of the season, stopped 27 of 28. Pavel Dorofeyev had the only New York goal.

Sully's chirp: McDavid's goal was his first in five games, which I'm told counts as a slump in Edmonton. In Boston we'd throw that guy a parade.

Wild 5, Capitals 1

Quinn Hughes scored 3:42 in and played 29:41. Michael McCarron, Maxim Shabanov, Danila Yurov and Kirill Kaprizov, into an empty net, added the rest. Jesper Wallstedt made 26 saves.

Lind's read: Minnesota is 4-0-1 in its last five, plus-11, by our count, and Wallstedt's save percentage over his last five starts is .929. Hughes eating half the game is the deployment that makes all of it possible.

Flyers 6, Mammoth 3

Matvei Michkov scored his 10th, Travis Konecny, Noah Cates, Christian Dvorak and Oliver Bonk followed, and Jamie Drysdale had three assists. Utah got two late power-play goals from Mikhail Sergachev and Logan Cooley before Cole Knuble hit the empty net.

Sully's chirp: Utah scored twice in 67 seconds when it was down four. Nice of them to show up for the cleanup.

Three stars of the night

  1. Cutter Gauthier, ANA — three goals, two on the power play, in a six-goal answer.
  2. Pyotr Kochetkov, CAR — 26 saves, shutout, still unbeaten.
  3. Evan Bouchard, EDM — a goal and two assists in 25:42.

Lind's number of the night

10-0-0. That's Kochetkov through 10 starts, per NHL data, with a .929 save percentage and two shutouts. Marcus had the extension in September. Ten starts in, he hasn't lost one.

Sully's take of the morning

Look, Winnipeg is in trouble. Five straight losses, minus-17, and Sunday they got shut out by a team that scored first while killing a penalty. Kyle Connor and Mark Scheifele went pointless, and Skinner got the hook halfway through the second.

Grade: F. Buddy, I'm begging you, somebody in that room flip a table. Gently. It's Canada.

Kessler's corner

Michigan went into Columbus and beat Ohio State 5-4 in overtime. The Wolverines are 8-1-0, and that's a real team in November.

Tonight

Four games. The Panthers host Detroit at 7 p.m. on Scripps and DSN, with the Red Wings coming in after a 5-4 loss in St. Louis and Dylan Larkin still away from the team.

Vegas at Boston is the other 7 p.m. puck drop and the one to watch: the Bruins are 10-4-1, the Golden Knights 9-5-1. Colorado visits Chicago at 8, and Calgary is at San Jose at 9. The Panthers game page has the lines once morning skate lands.
