Crosby took Ray Bourque's record, and Boston has to clap

Sidney Crosby's 1,112th assist with Pittsburgh passed Bourque for the most with one franchise, and he did it 84 games faster.

Look, I wanted Ray Bourque to keep this one forever. Instead Sidney Crosby took it in Montreal, on Halloween, in a loss. That's three things a Boston guy hates in one sentence.

Crosby's 1,112th regular-season assist came on Erik Karlsson's power-play goal in the first period Saturday. That moved him past Bourque's 1,111, the most assists any player has ever had with one franchise.

Bourque needed 1,518 games and 21 seasons in Boston to get there. Crosby is at 1,113 assists in 1,434 games with Pittsburgh, so by our count he did it in 84 fewer games. He didn't even have the decency to slow down.

Grade: A. I'd give it an A-plus, but the Bruins tax applies. Every record that goes through a Boston legend costs half a letter.

He tied it a week earlier against Nashville, and the play was pure Crosby. Down a goal with 1:06 left, he slid a cross-ice pass to Rickard Rakell for the tying goal, and Pittsburgh won in overtime. Most guys celebrate a record. Crosby treats it like a Tuesday.

Saturday he had a goal and two assists, his first three-point game of the season. He's also at 1,771 points, tied with Marcel Dionne for sixth all-time. On the way up the one-franchise list he passed Wayne Gretzky's 1,086 assists with Edmonton. At this point the record book should just hand him the pen and go get a coffee.

The Ferda number: Crosby has six assists through 14 games this season, per NHL data. Karlsson, the guy he set up for the record, has 13. So the NHL's single-franchise assist king isn't leading his own team in assists. Karlsson is playing 23.4 minutes a night like he's trying to get his name on the banner first.

Karlsson had three points Saturday too, which puts him at 952 for his career. That's six behind Larry Robinson for 10th among defensemen. Two Penguins chasing Hall of Famers in the same game, and Montreal still won 5-4. That's the 2026 Penguins in one box score.

Bruins tax: Bourque's number held up through 21 seasons of Boston hockey, and Pittsburgh got it back in one cross-ice pass and one power-play tap-in. In Boston, we'd already be on the radio blaming the Bruins' front office for letting it happen.

Not a real award: The Bourque Memorial Plaque for Making Boston Watch goes to Crosby. He took the record in a 5-4 loss in Montreal, so the only people who went home happy were Canadiens fans. Everybody wins except my city.

Buddy, I'm begging you, leave Bourque's name alone for one season. I said what I said.
