Dallas just lost Matt Duchene for three months
Core muscle surgery ends his season until mid-January, and the Stars have to find offense without him.

Matt Duchene just handed Dallas the one problem a cap-tight, win-now team never wants. Real minutes to replace. Nobody good enough to replace them.
Core muscle surgery on Monday puts him out until mid-January. The Stars are about to find out fast whether this roster was built around him, or just happened to have him on it.
Duchene had been trying to play through the injury since camp. That's the part that should worry Dallas more than the surgery itself. He took a bigger hit on the preseason trip to Minnesota, the kind of setback that turns "let's manage it" into "let's cut him open."
General manager Jim Nill called the procedure successful. He said Duchene is out through mid-January, which lines up with the three-month number everyone's using. Duchene goes on long-term injured reserve, backdated to Sept. 29. The cap relief is real even if the production isn't walking back through that door for a while.
Forty-five points in 57 games last year wasn't peak Duchene, not after a vestibular concussion chewed up a chunk of his season. It was still second-line center production, and Dallas doesn't have five of those lying around.
Sam Steel moves up to fill the middle. Dallas called up Colin Blackwell and Arttu Hyry, which tells you how thin this makes the forward group. Steel's a fine complementary piece. He is not a 45-point center, and pretending otherwise for three months is how a 2-2-1 start turns into a rough November.
The read: a deep team survives this kind of absence. A good-not-great team gets exposed by it. Dallas is still finding out which one it is this season.
There's a silver lining if Nill wants it. The cap space LTIR frees up is a real trade chip heading toward the deadline, if the Stars decide a rental center beats waiting Duchene out. Don't be shocked if this injury turns into a February trade story instead of just a January comeback one.
The Stars play Colorado on Tuesday, Duchene-less. That's the whole season in miniature now: find a way without him, or find out they can't.
