Connor McDavid scored shorthanded, set up three more and lost anyway. That's what happens when the other team's defenseman fights, scores twice and sets up the winner before the second intermission.

By our count, McDavid now has a point in all 17 of Edmonton's games, 44 points in all. The rest of an 11-game night brought three overtimes, a shootout and a Logan Cooley hat trick that Utah couldn't keep.

Ducks 5, Oilers 4

Vasily Podkolzin was gone 8:06 into the game with an instigator and a game misconduct after going after Drew Helleson. At 16:52 of the first, Pavel Mintyukov dropped the gloves with Kasperi Kapanen. Then he scored twice in 2:38 early in the second and set up Beckett Sennecke's winner at 19:22.

Sennecke added a power-play goal in the third, and Leon Draisaitl's late goal with the goalie pulled only made it close.

Sully's chirp: Podkolzin played under three minutes and took 27 penalty minutes. Even the 1970s Flyers would've asked him to pace himself.

Canadiens 5, Mammoth 4 (OT)

Cooley scored twice in the first and finished his hat trick on the power play in the second. Montreal tied it three times, the last on Adam Engstrom at 14:54 of the third, and Cole Caufield won it 30 seconds into overtime.

Lind's read: Utah was outshot 35-20 and stayed alive on a 3-for-5 power play. Mikhail Sergachev's assist ran his point streak to nine games, by our count.

Devils 5, Blues 4 (OT)

Anthony Mantha scored twice and New Jersey led 4-1 with 8:14 left. St. Louis scored three times in 3:08, from Mason McTavish, Philip Broberg and Dalibor Dvorsky. Jesper Bratt won it 1:26 into overtime.

Sully's chirp: Up three with eight minutes to go, and they still needed overtime. That's a Bruins 3-1 lead with a Jersey accent.

Predators 3, Avalanche 2 (OT)

Jaden Schwartz and Parker Kelly answered two first-period Nashville goals, and Steven Stamkos won it on the power play 2:18 into overtime. Justus Annunen made 30 saves.

Lind's read: Colorado outshot Nashville 32-25, but the Predators blocked 25 shots to the Avalanche's 10. That's the whole game in one number.

Hurricanes 5, Islanders 3

Carolina led 2-0 by 3:20, and the Islanders tied it twice. William Carrier scored the winner at 14:52 of the third, and Andrei Svechnikov had a goal, an assist and seven shots.

Sully's chirp: Carolina gave the puck away 23 times and still won by two. That's leaving your wallet at every bar on the street and waking up richer.

Bruins 6, Penguins 2

Pittsburgh scored first, then Boston scored three in the first period. Pavel Zacha scored twice, with David Pastrnak setting up both.

Lind's read: Six goals on 24 shots won't repeat. Boston's 22 blocked shots to Pittsburgh's seven can.

Lightning 4, Blackhawks 1

Ilya Mikheyev scored twice, Victor Hedman and Ryan McDonagh scored from the back end, and Andrei Vasilevskiy stopped 25 of 26. Roman Kantserov's goal at 19:10 of the third ran his point streak to seven games, by our count.

Sully's chirp: Chicago scored with 50 seconds left, down four. That's showing up to the potluck as everybody's leaving and asking where the plates are.

Blue Jackets 2, Stars 1 (SO)

Mikko Rantanen scored at 6:27 of the third, and Zach Werenski tied it at 16:46. Valeri Nichushkin had the shootout winner. Cam Talbot stopped 27 of 28.

Lind's read: Werenski played 29:21, per NHL data, and has points in five straight, by our count. Dallas won two of every three draws and gave the puck away 26 times.

Golden Knights 2, Red Wings 1

Nobody scored for 40 minutes. Anton Johansson put Detroit ahead at 2:02 of the third, Braeden Bowman tied it 2:18 later, and Trevor Connelly won it at 18:18.

Sully's chirp: Two full periods, zero goals. I've seen more action at a library book sale, and they at least had cookies.

Jets 6, Canucks 2

Six different Jets scored, and Mark Scheifele and Dawson Mercer each had a goal and an assist. Stuart Skinner made 24 saves.

Lind's read: Two of the six came from defensemen, Neal Pionk and Mario Ferraro, and Vancouver gave the puck away 22 times.

Rangers 3, Flyers 2

Philadelphia led 2-1 into the third. Pavel Dorofeyev tied it on the power play at 13:52 of the third, and Tye Kartye won it 89 seconds later.

Sully's chirp: The Flyers took a lead into the third and lost it and the game in 89 seconds. Philly doesn't blow leads. It returns them for store credit.

Three stars of the night

  1. Logan Cooley, UTA: three goals and an assist, in a loss.
  2. Pavel Mintyukov, ANA: two goals, an assist and a fight.
  3. Cam Talbot, CBJ: 27 saves on 28 shots, then the shootout.

EDGE of the night

One NHL EDGE season best fell last night. Most distance in a game: Matthew Schaefer, NYI, 4.9 miles. He played 30:01 to get there.

Lind's number of the night

33:09. That's how long Jackson LaCombe played in Edmonton, the most of anyone last night, per NHL data. Anaheim had eight power plays and LaCombe got 10:25 of them, and his assist ran his point streak to eight games.

Sully's take of the morning

Pavel Mintyukov is the best defenseman in the Pacific, and I don't want to hear it. He fought Kapanen, scored twice and set up the winner, all before the second intermission. That's a Gordie Howe hat trick with a goal for a tip.

Grade: A. I'll walk it back to top five next week. Today he drinks free.

Kessler's corner

Top-ranked Wisconsin is still unbeaten, just not perfect: the Badgers tied No. 18 Minnesota 1-1 at Mariucci (game page). No. 20 UConn won 6-5 at No. 9 Providence.

Tonight

Three games, and two of them come with tired legs. Columbus plays in Buffalo at 7 p.m. on a back-to-back, and Anaheim turns around for Calgary at 8 after its night in Edmonton.

The one to watch is San Jose at Minnesota at 8 on NHL Network. Kirill Kaprizov, Quinn Hughes, Matt Boldy and Joel Eriksson Ek each carry a six-game point streak, by our count, and Minnesota is -258 at DraftKings. The Panthers are off until Saturday in Washington.
