Canada opens 2027 World Juniors against Switzerland on Boxing Day

The 2027 World Juniors have a schedule, and it starts the way every Canadian wants it to: Boxing Day, Rogers Place, Canada on the ice. The tournament runs Dec. 26 through Jan. 5 in Edmonton and Red Deer, Alberta, with the semifinals and both medal games in Edmonton.

Canada sits in Group B in Edmonton with Switzerland, Latvia, Norway and Czechia. Per The Canadian Press, the hosts open against Switzerland on Dec. 26, then get Latvia on Dec. 28 and Norway on Dec. 29.

The group closer is the one worth circling: Czechia on New Year's Eve, which Hockey Canada notes is the first time in seven years the two have met on Dec. 31.

Group A plays in Red Deer, and that's the deep end of the pool. Defending champion Sweden is there with Finland, Germany, Slovakia and the United States. Daily Faceoff's Tyler Kuehl has the Americans opening with Germany on Dec. 26, taking on Slovakia on Dec. 28 and closing the round robin against Sweden on Dec. 31.

That means no Canada-USA game in the preliminary round. If the two want each other, they'll have to earn it in the playoff bracket. The relegation game and quarterfinals go Jan. 2, semifinals Jan. 4, and the bronze and gold games Jan. 5.

The context matters. Per the CHL, Sweden won gold in Minnesota last winter with a 4-2 win over Czechia in the final. Canada took bronze with a 6-3 decision over Finland, its first medal since the 2023 gold. Alberta last hosted in 2022.

Individual tickets go on sale Sept. 25, per Hockey Canada, with a priority draw and VIP packages already running.

Putting Canada in the softer group is fair. The hosts get the big barn and the easier road, and the Americans get Sweden and Finland in a smaller rink two hours down the highway. Nobody is complaining in Edmonton.

The real intrigue is Red Deer. Sweden, Finland and the U.S. in one five-team group means somebody good is finishing third and drawing a nasty quarterfinal. That's where tournaments get decided before the medal round even starts.

For Panthers fans, this is the annual prospect showcase. Whoever Florida's got in the pipeline that's still junior-eligible, this is the two weeks where you find out if they can handle the moment. And with Canada drawing Czechia on New Year's Eve, at least the holiday viewing has one game with real teeth in the round robin.
