Hagens goes on IR right before Boston gets the Panthers

The Bruins rookie was scoring at a rate only Pastrnak beats on the roster, and AHL goal leader Mikey Eyssimont gets the call.

Boston just lost the rookie who was giving it the most per minute outside of David Pastrnak, and Florida gets the Bruins on Sunday without him.

James Hagens went on injured reserve Saturday, and Marco Sturm says it will be "a few weeks." The kid was the reason Boston's middle six didn't need a fix. Now it does.

The number that matters

Hagens has 12 points in 17 games, six goals and six assists, which has him tied for the rookie scoring lead.

The better number is how little ice he needed to get there. He's averaging 13.3 minutes a night, per NHL data, and that works out to 3.18 points per 60 minutes by our count.

Among Bruins forwards with 10 or more games, only Pastrnak (3.80) produces faster. Elias Lindholm is at 2.90, Morgan Geekie 2.73, JJ Peterka 2.60. Sturm was feeding a 20-year-old third-line minutes, and he was outscoring the guys ahead of him on a per-shift basis.

How it happened

Hagens took a cross-check to the midsection from Pittsburgh's Samuel Girard while cutting to the net in the third period Thursday, and he didn't return. Sturm didn't blame Girard.

"Very unfortunate, it's not a dirty play or anything like that," Sturm said.

Who fills the hole

Marat Khusnutdinov took Hagens' spot on the right side with Casey Mittelstadt and Lindholm at Saturday's practice. Matt Poitras moved up to left wing with Fraser Minten and Geekie. Sturm said the combinations aren't final.

The call-up is the fun part. Mikey Eyssimont, 30, comes up from Providence with 13 goals in eight AHL games, including a natural hat trick in the final 2:08 on Friday to beat Hamilton 5-4.

"He definitely deserves the call up, let's put it that way," Sturm said.

That's a great American League story, and it isn't a Hagens replacement. Eyssimont is a hard-working depth forward on a heater. Hagens is a 20-year-old who drives a line with his feet and his hands.

Prospect watch: James Hagens, BOS

  • Draft: seventh overall, 2025.

  • Path: Boston College, then a three-year entry-level deal in April 2026. He debuted at the end of last season, with two regular-season and three playoff games.

  • This season: 6-6-12 in 17 games, 13.3 minutes a night.

  • Timeline: "a few weeks," Sturm says. IR is retroactive to Thursday.

  • Kessler's read: the injury pauses the climb, not the curve. He was earning a second-line look on production alone, and he'll get it when he's back.

Why Panthers fans should care

Boston leads the Atlantic at 12-4-1 and gets Florida at TD Garden on Sunday afternoon, the second half of the cats' road back-to-back. The Bruins still have Pastrnak, but their third line just lost its engine the day before.

That's a real edge for a Florida team that played Saturday afternoon and may be short its own rookie.

My call: Hagens is back before Christmas and finishes top three in rookie scoring. Eyssimont scores once in his first five games, and Boston's fans will love him for it.
