Connor McDavid has a point in every game Edmonton has played this season, and last night he needed five of them to get past Carolina in a shootout. That's 31 points in 10 games by our count. That's a pace nobody in the league can match right now.

In Pittsburgh, the Panthers left Cooper Black alone for his NHL debut and got shut out for the first time this season.

The games

Penguins 4, Panthers 0

Nick Robertson scored at 15:19 of the first and added an empty-netter late, with Hendrix Lapierre and Evgeni Malkin scoring in between. Arturs Silovs stopped all 26 shots for his second shutout of the season, while Black made 17 saves on 20. Pabs has the full recap with Maurice's postgame.

Pabs: The kid deserved one goal and the room knows it; Florida went 0 for 4 on the power play, including a four-minute double minor while trailing 2-0, and that was the entire evening.

Lind's read: Florida outhit Pittsburgh 32-10 and lost the giveaway count 23-15. The Panthers were outscored 9-1 across the back-to-back.

Sully's chirp: Florida threw 32 hits and scored zero goals. They finished every check in Pittsburgh except the one that pays.

Oilers 6, Hurricanes 5 (SO)

McDavid and Leon Draisaitl had two goals and three assists apiece; Juuso Välimäki put Carolina ahead 5-4 with 2:40 left, McDavid tied it at 18:32 of the third, and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins scored the only goal of the shootout.

Lind's read: Edmonton went 3 for 5 on the power play, and Evan Bouchard's point streak is at seven games by our count. Carolina scored five on Devon Levi and still lost, because Brandon Bussi gave up five on 21 shots at the other end.

Maple Leafs 5, Rangers 4

Troy Stecher won it with 28 seconds left, five minutes after Alexis Lafrenière had tied it 4-4, which wasted four assists from Adam Fox.

Sully's chirp: Toronto won on a Troy Stecher goal with 28 seconds left. The city has already filed the paperwork for a celebratory parade.

Sharks 6, Senators 2

Ottawa outshot San Jose 43-28 and lost by four, because Yaroslav Askarov made 41 saves, and the Sharks scored three times in 4:05 of the second, from Tyler Toffoli on the power play, Collin Graf shorthanded and Jacob Trouba at even strength.

Lind's read: Ottawa's power play went 0 for 3 and sits at 12.2% for the season, per NHL data. With Linus Ullmark hurt, the Senators can't afford a man advantage that converts like that.

Kings 3, Islanders 2 (OT)

Artemi Panarin scored twice in the first, Matthew Schaefer tied it in the third with one of his nine shots, and Brandt Clarke won it 2:43 into overtime. Darcy Kuemper stopped 41 of 43.

Sully's chirp: Schaefer played 29:24 and put nine shots on net. At that workload the Islanders owe him overtime pay, and he did get overtime, so I guess they're square.

Blues 6, Golden Knights 2

Justin Barron had a goal and three assists from the blue line, and Dylan Holloway scored twice. St. Louis went 2 for 2 on the power play while Vegas never got a chance.

Lind's read: Holloway has a point in six straight by our count, and Vegas threw 36 hits to St. Louis's 13 and was outscored 4-2 after the first intermission anyway.

Bruins 6, Predators 0

David Pastrnak had two goals and two assists, Charlie McAvoy had four assists, and Michael DiPietro stopped all 28 shots. Boston is 4-0-1 in its last five with a plus-13 goal differential, per NHL data.

Sully's chirp: The Bruins are plus-13 over five games, and I'd like the record to show I've believed in this team since roughly Tuesday.

Flames 2, Wild 1

Devin Cooley stopped 36 of 37, including 11 while Calgary was shorthanded. Power-play goals from Aydar Suniev and Joel Farabee held up.

Lind's read: Calgary was outshot 37-22, so this was a goalie win, nothing more complicated, and Dustin Wolf is at .834 through five starts, per NHL data. Cooley just made the crease conversation in Calgary a lot louder.

The rest of the night

Stars 3, Jets 2 (OT): Roope Hintz tied it with two minutes left in regulation and won it 3:47 into overtime.

Devils 4, Ducks 1: Jesper Bratt had two assists, and Anaheim has lost five straight by a combined 11 goals, per NHL data.

Kraken 5, Mammoth 3: five different Seattle skaters scored, and Logan Cooley's two goals weren't enough for Utah.

Red Wings 5, Canucks 2: Lucas Raymond scored twice, and Vancouver is 0-4-1 in its last five.

Three stars of the night

  1. Connor McDavid, EDM: two goals, three assists and the tying goal with 1:28 left.
  2. David Pastrnak, BOS: two goals and two assists in a 6-0 win.
  3. Devin Cooley, CGY: 36 saves on 37 shots.

Lind's number of the night

.865. That's Brandon Bussi's save percentage through six starts, per NHL data, after five goals on 21 shots in Edmonton. Pyotr Kochetkov is 6-0 at .899, and together those two numbers explain why Carolina keeps calling Winnipeg.

Sully's take of the morning

Look, the Panthers have been outscored 9-1 in two nights, and the only guy who played like he wanted another game was making his NHL debut. The top six owes Cooper Black a steak dinner, and not the airport kind. Grade: D.

Logan Stanley and Samuel Helenius had the only tilt of the night, five apiece at 16:49 of the first. A Kings-Islanders game on a Thursday in October needed something.

Gord's whisper

Friedman has Connor Hellebuyck's suspension ending today, and Dreger had Carolina as the only team making consistent offers as of Tuesday. Grade: Reported. Gord has the full board on the Hellebuyck market.

Tonight

Two games on the schedule: Tampa Bay, 4-1 in its last five, visits Colorado at 9 p.m. ET, with the Avalanche at -125 and the Lightning at +105. Montreal is at Chicago at 8 p.m. ET on NHL Network, with the Canadiens at -148 on DraftKings. Florida plays in Chicago on Sunday at 3 p.m. (21+. Gambling problem? Call 1-800-GAMBLER.)
