Ferda Ice Breaker cover: the Ferda Hockey shield bursting out of shattering ice

Tim Stützle walked into TD Garden and scored twice, one of them shorthanded, and the Senators are 2-0. Jake Oettinger got the easiest shutout of the young season in Dallas, and the Flyers are still looking for their first win. There were four games on the Monday card, and for once nobody needed overtime to settle anything.

Senators 4, Bruins 1

Stützle scored shorthanded at 7:39 of the first, scored again at 9:22, then set up Drake Batherson early in the second. Michael Amadio made it 4-0 at 5:19 of the second. James Hagens broke the shutout at 3:30 of the third, his second goal of the season.

Linus Ullmark stopped all 10 shots he saw over two periods before Samuel Ersson took the third, while Jeremy Swayman made 20 saves on 24 shots at the other end.

Sully's chirp: Boston went 0-for-4 on the power play and gave up a shorthanded goal on one of them. Then Zadorov and Jeannot took misconducts with four seconds left, which is a lot of energy to save for the only part of the night nobody could lose.

Lightning 4, Flyers 1

Brayden Point opened it late in the first, and Pontus Holmberg scored 17 seconds into the second. Tyson Foerster got one back at 7:22, but Ilya Mikheyev made it 3-1 late in the third and Brandon Hagel hit the empty net.

Andrei Vasilevskiy only had to stop 13 of 14, while Dan Vladar made 32 saves at the other end and deserved considerably better. Simon Benoit and Jeffrey Viel fought at 2:20 of the third.

Lind's read: Tampa outshot Philadelphia 36-14, and Hagel alone generated eight of those shots on 20 minutes of ice time. Nikita Kucherov's two assists give him four points in three games, with nearly six minutes of power-play time contributing nothing to that total, which tells you the even-strength production is real.

Jets 3, Penguins 2

Ben Kindel opened the scoring in the second. Then the third got silly: Alex Iafallo tied it at 4:43 and Adam Lowry put Winnipeg ahead at 7:08. Declan Carlile tied it at 8:53, and Cole Perfetti won it nine seconds later.

Clay Stevenson made 30 saves for the win, and Sergei Murashov made 31 in the loss.

Lind's read: Kindel played 18:36 and has three points in two games, so Pittsburgh is deliberately giving a second-year center real responsibility. The loss came from the shift immediately after the tying goal, which is a concentration problem more than a personnel one, and that's the easier problem to fix.

Stars 5, Sharks 0

Miro Heiskanen scored late in the first, then Joel Kiviranta, Jamie Benn and Jason Robertson scored in the second. Mikko Rantanen added another in the third period, finishing a comfortable evening in Dallas. Oettinger stopped all 13 shots he faced, and Yaroslav Askarov made 21 saves on 26.

Sully's chirp: San Jose got 13 shots on goal in 60 minutes. That's not a shutout, that's a paid nap, and I'm still calling Oettinger a Vezina guy. Book it.

Three stars of the night

Our picks, labeled as ours.

  1. Tim Stützle, OTT: two goals, one shorthanded, and an assist in Boston.
  2. Jake Oettinger, DAL: 13 saves, shutout.
  3. Cole Perfetti, WPG: the winner, nine seconds after Pittsburgh tied it.

By our count: Perfetti, Kucherov, Erik Karlsson and Carlile have a point in every game they've played this season. That's three games apiece, so consider it an encouraging opening week rather than a reliable indicator.

Lind's number of the night

158-76. That's how badly the Flyers have been outshot through four games, by our count, and they've scored five goals. They're 0-2-2, and that consistent territorial deficit suggests those two overtime points were generous rather than earned.

Sully's take of the morning

Look, the Bruins' power play is 0-for-the-season, and four games in it's not a slump anymore, it's a personality. Kept off the sheet: Pavel Zacha, no points in four games at 18:36 a night, and Casey Mittelstadt, no points in four at 14:42. Buddy, I'm begging you, the net is the big thing with the orange pipes.

Fight of the night was Benoit and Viel in Tampa, Philly down 2-1. Benoit was trying to wake up a bench that finished with 14 shots. The bench thanked him and went back to sleep. Grade on the Bruins' week: D. I said what I said.

Tonight

Nine games. The Panthers are at the Kings at 10 PM ET on ESPN, and all three of Florida's games have gone to overtime so far. Barkov is still out, so the heavy minutes keep landing on the same group of forwards.

Islanders at Rangers at 7:30 PM on ESPN is the early national game. The one to watch for a reason is Ottawa at Detroit at 7 PM, the Senators' second night in a row after the Boston win. Vegas at Seattle at 9:40 PM on Prime Video is the late appetizer before the cats.
