Around the minors: Victo's six-goal comeback, a 17-year-old goalie, four ECHL stripes to the NHL

Opening week in the CHL gave us a six-goal comeback, a 17-year-old goalie stealing games, and a Canadiens prospect running the WHL from the blue line. Down in the ECHL, four stripes got the call every official dreams about. Here's the tour.

Victoriaville comes back from 6-0 down to beat Drummondville 8-7

The Tigres trailed the Voltigeurs 6-0 midway through the second period on Sunday and won 8-7 in front of 2,027 at home, per Mon Victo. Deryk Lemaire scored twice, including the goal that put Victoriaville up 7-6. Drummondville tied it, and captain Egor Shilov buried the winner.

Xavier Lebel had a goal and three assists. Andrei Nikolayev came on in relief, stopped 18 of 20, and picked up his first QMJHL win.

Ferda read: a six-goal hole in junior hockey is usually a coaching-change kind of night for the loser. Drummondville's goalie faced 45 shots and got zero help from the bench in front of him.

Beuker, Klimpke and Malinoski take the WHL's first weekly awards

Lethbridge center Dayne Beuker is the WHL Rookie of the Week after a goal and two assists in two games, per the league. He scored the Hurricanes' first goal of the season against Medicine Hat. Saskatoon defenseman Brayden Klimpke, a Canadiens prospect, is Player of the Week with three goals and two assists on opening weekend.

Seattle's Grayson Malinoski took Goaltender of the Week with 31 saves in a 1-0 overtime win over Wenatchee, his first WHL shutout.

Ferda read: Montreal fans should bookmark Klimpke. An 18-year-old D leading all defensemen and sitting second in league scoring after one weekend is either a hot start or a scouting win. Either way, it's fun.

Royden Smith is the OHL Rookie of the Week after two starts

The Kingston goalie went 2-0 with a 2.46 goals-against average and a .933 save percentage, per the OHL. His debut was a 44-save win over Peterborough, the most saves by a Frontenacs goalie in an OHL debut in three decades. He followed it with 26 stops in a 3-2 overtime win over Ottawa.

Smith is 17, listed at 6-foot-5 and 205 pounds, and was a fifth-round pick in the 2025 OHL Priority Selection.

Four ECHL officials promoted to the NHL

Referees Nick Isaacson, Austin Rook and Hayden Verbeek, plus linesman Anthony Lapointe, are moving to the NHL for 2026-27, the ECHL announced. Rook worked the Kelly Cup Finals last spring. That brings the count of former ECHL officials in the NHL to 41, and five of them worked the 2026 Stanley Cup Final.

Ferda read: nobody cheers when the refs get called up, but the ECHL-to-NHL pipeline is real. Remember the names the next time you yell at one of them in Sunrise.

Kings send 21 players out, including three goalies

Los Angeles assigned 21 players Monday night, per Pro Hockey Rumors: 12 to AHL Ontario, including goalies Carter George, Hampton Slukynsky and Owen Flores, and five back to junior. Jan Chovan heads to Sudbury and Adam Goljer to Kingston.

Ferda read: three goalies down at once is the tell that the Kings' NHL crease is set. Everyone else in that group is fighting for an AHL net.
