PWHL Las Vegas builds a staff that reads like a scouting department

Vegas didn't just fill out a bench. It hired a goaltending coach with three Olympic medals to his name. It hired a video coordinator who spent two years building infrastructure at Princeton. That's the tell. This expansion club is building a development program, not just a staff list.

Las Vegas added Ryan Smith and Jonathan Matsumoto as assistant coaches. Brad Kirkwood comes in as goaltending coach, Brendan Flanagan as video coach. They join head coach Kim Weiss, who took the job back in June.

Smith spent 11 seasons in WHL head and associate roles in Swift Current, Medicine Hat, Spokane and Regina, and coached Canada's U16 and U18 men's staffs in 2024, including a U18 gold in Finland.

Matsumoto played more than 1,000 games across the NCAA, NHL, AHL and Europe. He coached a decade in Germany and founded a coaching-video platform on the side.

Kirkwood is the hire that separates this staff from a typical expansion bench. He's coached Canada's national women's program since 2015 — three Olympic medals, seven IIHF World Championship medals — and spent three seasons as the Toronto Sceptres' goaltending coach before this. A team with him in the room isn't hoping its goaltending sorts itself out.

Flanagan, the video hire, spent two seasons running hockey ops and video for St. Lawrence and Princeton's programs. That's the unglamorous infrastructure work that shows up in October, not on a roster page in June.

GM Dominique DiDia called it a staff that brings "a unique perspective and experience from across all levels of hockey." That's the kind of line every release has. What's actually true: an expansion team spent its coaching hires on pedigree in the two jobs that decide whether a first season is a mess or a foundation.

The W read: the splashy PWHL coaching news this week was Detroit adding a Hall of Famer and a Cup-winning NHL goalie to its bench. Vegas's staff is quieter, and goalie for goalie, it's deeper.

Kirkwood's résumé is as good as anyone's in the women's game. Get the goaltending infrastructure right in year one, and you're not scrambling for it in year three.
