Vancouver locks up Caroline Harvey, and the Goldeneyes run through her now

Vancouver just signed the best defender on the planet to a three-year deal, and the Goldeneyes' second season now runs through one player.

Caroline Harvey is the kind of first-overall pick you build a room around, not the kind you ease in. If Vancouver doesn't give her the top pair, the power play and 25 minutes a night by New Year's, somebody in the front office will have some explaining to do.

The deal runs through 2028-29. The league didn't release the money, which is standard for the PWHL and still mildly annoying for everyone who likes to argue about value.

Why she's the easy call

Look at the résumé and try to find the hole. Harvey won the Patty Kazmaier Award last season at Wisconsin with 18 goals and 64 points in 33 games, from the blue line. She finished her Badgers career with 201 points in 147 games and three national titles.

Then there's February. At the Milan Olympics she tied for the tournament scoring lead with nine points, took the gold and walked off as tournament MVP. She has five World Championship medals and two Best Defender awards at the Worlds. She's 23.

That's not a prospect. That's a finished product who happens to be a rookie.

What it means for Vancouver

The Goldeneyes now have 19 players under contract, and Harvey is the second of their five draft picks to sign. GM Alison Izzi has been putting her stamp on this roster since her hire, and this is the signature piece.

"KK is an incredibly accomplished defender whose achievements speak for themselves," Izzi said.

They do, so here's the real question: what does Vancouver build around her?

A defender who moves the puck like Harvey turns a slow breakout into a rush the other way. She needs a partner who can cover when she jumps, and forwards who expect the puck on the tape at the far blue line.

Build it that way and the Goldeneyes play faster than they did a year ago. Park her on the second pair to protect a veteran's ice time and you've wasted the pick.

The opener is Dec. 5 at the Pacific Coliseum against the Seattle Torrent. Seattle came into the league with Vancouver, so it's a fair early measuring stick.
