Florida Panthers injury report: Marchand and Barkov resume skating
Two forwards take a step toward returning, but missing their starting goalie still puts extra pressure on the defending group.

The Florida Panthers should treat this week’s skating progress as encouragement, not a reason to loosen their game. For the week of November 2, the priority is still protecting the middle without Aleksander Barkov and keeping life manageable for whoever starts in Jacob Markstrom’s place.

What changed this week
-
Brad Marchand: The October 29 update says he’s begun skating, with a tentative return estimate of three weeks. That’s progress, but it isn’t a new team-announced deadline; the six-week absence announced October 9 remains the baseline. Florida should plan its left side without him rather than build around the optimistic end of an estimate.
-
Aleksander Barkov: The October 29 update says he resumed skating Wednesday. His announced recovery window remains six to eight weeks as of October 6, and his Injured Reserve designation hasn’t changed. Getting back on the ice matters; treating that as an imminent return would be getting ahead of the play.
-
Jacob Markstrom: His latest update, dated October 20, still has him on Injured Reserve with an upper-body injury. Paul Maurice said the absence would last about 10 to 14 days. That window doesn’t establish a return date, so Florida’s defensive approach shouldn’t depend on penciling him back in.
-
Jonah Gadjovich: There’s no new development beyond the September 17 update, when the team announced he’d be out indefinitely following an upper-body injury and surgery. He remains on Injured Reserve. The fourth line needs a workable identity without waiting for his return.
Lineup impact
Barkov’s absence is the biggest structural problem. Florida shouldn’t ask one replacement center to duplicate his job; I’d spread the defensive burden and make short, connected exits the priority. Wingers have to offer a usable outlet instead of leaving the center stranded below the puck.
Without Marchand, I’d favor dependable wall work over chasing an offensive spark on the left side. Clean possession through the neutral zone gives a depleted forward group more than hopeful passes into traffic.
Markstrom’s absence makes that discipline more urgent. Keep the slot covered, limit second chances and resist sending both defensemen into the attack. The replacement goalie shouldn’t have to rescue a risky breakout all night.
Pabs’ read: Keep the game tight until the lineup gets healthier; skating updates aren’t a reason to start trading chances.
