Markstrom sheds designation; Barkov and Gadjovich now on injured reserve

Florida’s October 17 injury report brings movement in goal, but missing forwards still leave plenty of work for the remaining lineup.

Markstrom sheds designation; Barkov and Gadjovich now on injured reserve

Live Panthers injury report →

Jacob Markstrom is off the Florida Panthers’ injury report, the most useful change since October 15. Aleksander Barkov and Jonah Gadjovich now carry injured-reserve designations rather than LTIR, but that’s no reason to pencil either forward into the lineup.

Status board

  • Jacob Markstrom — Off injury report — Injury: undisclosed — Timeline: not announced
  • Radko Gudas (D) — Out — Injury: undisclosed — Timeline: not announced
  • Brad Marchand (LW) — Injured Reserve — Injury: Leg — Timeline: out 6 weeks as of Oct. 9
  • Aleksander Barkov (C) — Injured Reserve — Injury: Lower Body — Timeline: out 6-8 weeks as of Oct. 6
  • Jonah Gadjovich (LW) — Injured Reserve — Injury: Upper Body, Surgery — Timeline: not announced

Lineup watch

Markstrom’s change is welcome for a team that needs fewer moving parts, especially in goal. It shouldn’t double as a starting assignment: Florida should settle the crease on readiness, not the relief of seeing a designation disappear.

Barkov’s lower-body injury still carries the six-to-eight-week window announced October 6. Gadjovich remains out indefinitely following an upper-body injury and surgery, as the team announced September 17. Those reserve-label changes don’t solve the hole at center or restore an option on the wing; I’d plan the forward rotation without either player for now.

Brad Marchand remains on injured reserve with a leg injury. His six-week absence, announced October 9, also remains the working timeline. Coach Paul Maurice’s plan called for three weeks off the ice followed by three weeks on it, so practice progress shouldn’t become a shortcut to return expectations.

With Barkov and Marchand unavailable, my priority would be repeatable puck support over ambitious line juggling. Keep a short outlet near the wall, give the center help below the dots, and make the next pass available. Asking replacements to manufacture every exit alone is a fine way to spend a whole shift defending.

The next-game priority

Radko Gudas is now out with an undisclosed injury, a change from his previous day-to-day status. Earlier expectations of a return in Ottawa shouldn’t outweigh that current designation. I’d prepare the defense to play without him rather than build a plan around a hoped-for comeback.

Florida’s power play also needs a cleaner approach despite the absences. My call: prioritize retrieval support and quick puck movement over forcing a seam that isn’t there.

Pabs' read: Markstrom’s change is progress, not an all-clear for Florida. Keep the forward roles steady, prepare without Gudas, and make the available lineup win with connected shifts rather than rescue missions.
