Anaheim beat the Panthers with the one thing Florida couldn't stop last night: its power play. The Ducks went 3 for 4, and Brad Marchand's first game since March ended with a tying goal and a loss anyway. The Room's locks for the week are here.

Ducks 3, Panthers 2 (OT)

Cutter Gauthier scored on two Anaheim power plays, and Carter Verhaeghe answered the first one 51 seconds later. Marchand tied it with the goalie pulled and 1:50 left, set up by Lars Eller. Gustav Forsling took a trip in overtime, and Mikael Granlund deflected the winner on the 4-on-3. Pabs has the full recap with the postgame quotes.

Pabs: The cats outshot Anaheim 31-21 and never surrendered an even-strength goal. You don't lose that game unless you keep handing the other team a man advantage, and that's exactly what happened.

Lind's read: Jacob Markstrom stopped all 14 even-strength shots he faced, per NHL data. Florida's power play is 1 for 17 through three games by our count, and that's the gap between one point and two.

Sully's chirp: Florida took four penalties, and Anaheim converted three of them. The penalty box should start charging the cats rent.

Jets 3, Red Wings 2

Winnipeg's power play went 3 for 4. Cole Perfetti and Kyle Connor scored on it in the first period, and Connor converted again on the man advantage in the second. Viktor Arvidsson and Emmitt Finnie got Detroit within one. Stuart Skinner made 33 saves, and Tyrel Bauer and Keegan Kolesar dropped the gloves at 12:10 of the first period.

Lind's read: Detroit outshot Winnipeg 35-27 and lost because its penalty kill is at 50 percent through two games, by our count. Josh Morrissey had two assists and seven shots in 21:36, which is a defenseman running the whole show.

Kraken 6, Flames 1

Mackie Samoskevich scored twice, and center Berkly Catton contributed a goal and an assist in only 12:42 of ice time. Shane Wright, Bobby McMann and Jordan Eberle piled on, while Joey Daccord stopped 32 of 33 and Morgan Frost's third-period power-play goal kept it from a shutout.

Sully's chirp: Calgary outshot Seattle 33-27 and lost by five. Shots on goal are a stat, fellas, not a currency.

Rangers 4, Mammoth 2

Vladislav Gavrikov opened the scoring and later set up J.T. Miller's eventual game-winner. Gabe Perreault and Eeli Tolvanen also found the net, and Igor Shesterkin made 28 saves. Nick Schmaltz scored on the power play and Andrew Peeke added one for Utah. Will Cuylle and Jack McBain fought 1:03 into the third.

Lind's read: Utah outshot New York 30-22, and Shesterkin's .933 night covered the difference. Clayton Keller's assist stretched his point streak to three games, with five points in that run, by our count.

Golden Knights 3, Canucks 2

Mitch Marner, Victor Olofsson on the power play and Marc Gatcomb all scored in the second period for Vegas, while Paul Cotter and Jonathan Lekkerimäki answered for Vancouver and Adin Hill finished with 18 saves.

Sully's chirp: Marner opened the scoring and took the first star in Vancouver. Somewhere in Toronto, a guy just threw his remote at a game the Leafs weren't even in.

By our count: Leo Carlsson had three assists last night and has five points in two games. Jack Eichel's assist pushed his point streak to three games, with six points in that span. It's a small sample, but those are two centers whose teams are leaning on them immediately.

Three stars of the night

  1. Cutter Gauthier, ANA: two power-play goals and an assist on the overtime winner against Florida.
  2. Kyle Connor, WPG: two goals and an assist, all three points on the power play.
  3. Joey Daccord, SEA: 32 saves on 33 shots.

Lind's number of the night: 11 of 28. That's how many of last night's goals came on the power play, by our count. In the opening week of a season, with special-teams units still being assembled and reshuffled, discipline is deciding games.

Sully's take of the morning

Look, Will Cuylle took a roughing call in the first, a roughing and a boarding call in the second, then dropped the gloves with Jack McBain in the third. Eleven penalty minutes, and then he went out and set up Tolvanen's insurance goal. That's a Gordie Howe hat trick with the goal still in the mail. Grade: A-minus.

Kept off the sheet: Sam Reinhart, three games, zero points, 22.3 minutes a night, per NHL data. Buddy, I'm begging you, the net is the big thing with the mesh on it.

Kessler's corner: Michigan Tech beat No. 14 Minnesota 3-1 in Houghton on Sunday, scoring twice in the third. That's a CCHA program knocking off a ranked Big Ten opponent in its own building, and a reminder that October polls are mostly educated guesses. Box score.

Tonight
