Cooper Black is the Panthers' seatbelt for the Ottawa-Pittsburgh back-to-back
Florida recalled Black from Charlotte with Markstrom one game back from injury, and the goalie numbers make the split easy: Markstrom in Ottawa, Schmid in Pittsburgh.

Cooper Black coming back up isn't a goalie controversy. It's Florida buying an extra set of pads for a back-to-back, with a starter only one game removed from an injury. That's the smart play, and it tells you how Paul Maurice wants to split the next two nights.
The Panthers recalled Black from Charlotte on Tuesday, his second trip up this month after a stay from Oct. 13 to 16. The road trip opens Wednesday in Ottawa, and the team flies out after the game to play Pittsburgh on Thursday. That's two nights and two cities with a goalie who just got healthy.
Why the extra goalie makes sense
Jacob Markstrom missed time with an undisclosed injury, came back Saturday and beat Seattle with 20 saves on 23 shots. Before that, Maurice said he expected Markstrom to be ready for Ottawa. Expecting a guy to play once isn't the same as asking him to play twice in about 24 hours.
So Black is the seatbelt. He's 25, he signed as an undrafted free agent in 2024, and he got a two-year, two-way extension in June.
In Charlotte he's 2-1-0 with a .919 save percentage, including 33 saves in a 4-2 win over Hartford on Saturday. He carried the Checkers last season too, with 42 games and 25 wins. That's a real third goalie, not a warm body.
The number that decides the split
Here's what jumps out from our count. Markstrom is at .898 through six starts. Akira Schmid is at .878 through four appearances. Over their recent starts, our archive has them dead even at .883, per NHL data. Neither guy has grabbed the net and run with it, which is why nobody should be calling either night a demotion.
It's a small sample in early October, but even numbers make the call easy: give the tougher building to the veteran and the softer one to the backup.
My split
Lineup watch: Markstrom in Ottawa. It's the emotional game, the building will be loud for Brady Tkachuk, and Linus Ullmark is stopping .945 at the other end, per NHL data. Florida needs its most settled goalie in that one, and Markstrom has been the steadier of the two over the full season.
Schmid in Pittsburgh. The Penguins are 1-4 over their last five with a minus-10 goal differential by our count, and they've lost five of six on the road. Schmid already won twice in three nights last week, Oct. 13 and 15. He's earned the back half.
Black's job is simple: dress, wear the hat, and be ready if somebody tightens up. If he plays Thursday, something went wrong in Ottawa. That's the whole point of calling him up.
The one thing I'd watch is Markstrom's first period Wednesday. If he looks free in the crease, Maurice can relax. If he's guarding something, Black's trip turns from insurance into a start, and that would be a much bigger story.
Pabs' read: It's a quiet move with a clear plan behind it, Markstrom then Schmid, and Black on the bench so nobody has to play hurt. Dale.
