Around the minors: Florida's goalie ladder moves all the way down
Cooper Black's recall pulled Tyler Muszelik up from Savannah, Reinbacher is back in Montreal and the ECHL drops the puck Friday.

The most interesting depth chart in the Panthers organization right now isn't in Sunrise. It's the goalie ladder from Savannah to Charlotte, and one day-to-day tag just moved every rung. Around the minors, this week is about kids getting the call, a few AHL hot starts, and a whole league getting ready to drop the puck.
The Charlotte line: a goalie domino from Sunrise to Savannah
With Jacob Markstrom day-to-day, Florida recalled Cooper Black from Charlotte on Tuesday and loaned Tyler Muszelik from the ECHL's Savannah Ghost Pirates to the Checkers. Black is 25, stands 6-foot-9, and hasn't played an NHL game.
Muszelik, 22, signed his two-year entry-level deal in March after four college seasons at UNH and UConn, then made 20 saves in his AHL debut at Hershey on Oct. 11.
The number behind the shuffle: Markstrom is at .905 through five starts and Akira Schmid at .875 through three appearances, per NHL data. Meanwhile Kirill Gerasimyuk leads Charlotte with a .962 in one start.
Kessler's read: Black gets the NHL backup seat for now, but the kid to watch is Muszelik. A Hockey East goalie who earns AHL starts in October is ahead of schedule.
Reinbacher gets another look in Montreal
The Canadiens recalled David Reinbacher from Laval on Wednesday. The fifth overall pick in 2023 has two assists in four AHL games and had one assist in two games with Montreal last season. Laval's Laurent Dauphin is tied for the AHL scoring lead with eight points in four games.
Kessler's read: this is a recall about need, not a promotion. If he sticks past a week, that's the real news.
Coachella Valley's kids are filling the scoresheet
Seattle's AHL club has three of the league's top ten scorers. Jani Nyman has six goals in four games, Tyson Jugnauth has eight assists, and Jagger Firkus has seven points. Toronto's Marlies are right there with them, with Logan Shaw at eight points and Brendan Brisson at five goals.
Kessler's read: four games is a tiny sample, but eight assists in four nights means Jugnauth is running a power play, not riding one.
Postava picks up where he left off
Michal Postava is 3-0 for Grand Rapids with a 1.34 goals-against average and a .950 save percentage. The Griffins' Jesse Kiiskinen has five goals in five games in front of him. Last season Postava shared the Hap Holmes award with Sebastian Cossa, after Grand Rapids allowed the fewest goals in the AHL.
Kessler's read: Detroit has a goalie problem only if you stop looking at Grand Rapids.
The ECHL drops the puck Friday
The ECHL opens its season on Oct. 16 with 30 teams and 1,080 games, running through April 11. The headliner is the expansion New Mexico Goatheads, who host Idaho in Rio Rancho on opening night. That's pro hockey back in New Mexico for the first time in nearly two decades.
Kessler's read: the best night on the minor-league calendar. Pabs will have the Everblades. I'll be watching the Goatheads' building, because a sold-out expansion opener says more about the league than any standings page.
Prospect watch: Tyler Muszelik
- Rights: Florida Panthers
- Contract: two-year entry-level deal, signed March 30, 2026
- Where: Charlotte (AHL), on loan from Savannah (ECHL)
- Timeline: an AHL backup this fall, with starts if Gerasimyuk or Black is up
