Marchand is right about the system, and the cats need him back

Marchand called the no-trade debate a broken system, but the bigger news is Maurice saying he's closer than the end of October.

Brad Marchand is right about the system, and he's the last guy in this league who has to explain why. But the Marchand news that matters in Sunrise this week isn't on Instagram. It's that he's skating, and with the captain's knee waiting on an MRI, the cats need his legs a lot more than his opinions.

The fight he picked

On Thursday, Gary Bettman said no-trade clauses may need another look. His point: the protection was built for players who took long-term or team-friendly deals in exchange for stability, not as a tool to demand a trade and then hand-pick the destination. Gord has the whole case for and against.

Marchand answered the same day on Instagram: "This goes both ways. I guess it's ok if a team signs you to a long-term deal and wants to trade you, but not if you want out during that term. Broken system."

He's earned that one. Boston moved him at the March 2025 deadline, in the final year of his deal, for a conditional second-round pick. Teams move guys with term every February and call it business. A player asks out and it's a crisis. That's the double standard, and Marchand has seen it from the inside.

My one add: the commissioner doesn't get to fix this with a press conference. No-trade rules live in the CBA, and the union will treat any change like the bargaining chip it is.

The part that matters here

Marchand, 38, had surgery in August, and Maurice said in September he'd miss all of October. Then he practiced with the team in San Jose on Wednesday, and the tone changed. Maurice said he's "probably further ahead than we thought" and "closer … than the end of the month."

That timeline matters more today than it did on Wednesday. Barkov played 9.3 minutes in San Jose before he left, down 11.3 from the opener, per NHL data. Florida is waiting on his MRI before anybody should pencil in a lineup.

Lineup watch

The scoring hasn't followed the minutes yet. Sam Reinhart has played 44.6 minutes through two games without a point, by our count, and Brady Tkachuk has gone 36.2 minutes without one. Two games is nothing. It's also exactly the kind of start a guy who scored 27 goals in 52 games last season can fix.

Matthew Tkachuk's ice time jumped 3.8 minutes to 22.8 in San Jose, and that's where the load goes when the room gets short. Marchand back on the left side pushes everybody down a peg, and that's the best depth move Zito can make without picking up the phone.
