Florida Panthers injury report: Barkov absence keeps center depth under pressure

Florida’s biggest lineup problem is still the middle: Aleksander Barkov remains on injured reserve with a knee injury entering the week of October 5, 2026. I’d prioritize reliable center play over loading up one scoring line; replacing his role takes more than moving a name up the card.

Status board

  • Aaron Ekblad (D) — Day-To-Day — Injury: Personal — Timeline: estimated return Oct 5
  • Aleksander Barkov (C) — Injured Reserve — Injury: Knee — Timeline: estimated return Oct 26
  • MacKenzie Entwistle (RW) — Injured Reserve — Injury: Undisclosed — Timeline: estimated return Oct 9
  • Jonah Gadjovich (LW) — Injured Reserve — Injury: Upper Body, Surgery — Timeline: estimated return Oct 16

What changed this week

  • Aaron Ekblad: The October 5 update keeps him day-to-day for personal reasons. That designation shouldn’t be treated as a physical injury or a promise that he’ll play the next game. There’s no announced return date, so defensive deployment remains a watch point rather than a settled question.
  • Aleksander Barkov: His October 3 update keeps him at IR-LT with the knee injury. There’s no announced return timeline. For lineup purposes, the important distinction is that he isn’t designated day-to-day; Florida needs a workable center plan, not one built around an assumed quick return.
  • MacKenzie Entwistle: His latest update remains September 29, with an IR-NR designation and an undisclosed injury. There’s no newer status change or announced return timeline here. He shouldn’t be penciled into a depth solution before his availability changes.
  • Jonah Gadjovich: The latest update remains September 17, when the team announced he was out indefinitely with an upper-body injury. His designation remains IR-LT, with surgery also noted. That’s a continuing absence, not a new setback this week, and “indefinitely” doesn’t provide a target date.

Lineup impact

Barkov’s absence is the one I’d build the lineup around first. The temptation is to chase offense with the remaining combinations. I’d start with who can support the defense low in the zone, then still arrive in position to make the next pass.

That matters because a center vacancy can turn into a five-man problem. If the forwards leave early, the defense loses its short outlet. If everyone drops too low, there’s nobody to carry the exit forward. Florida needs connected shifts more than a clever-looking line card.

Ekblad’s day-to-day status adds uncertainty on defense, but personal reasons aren’t something to translate into a medical forecast. I’d prepare an alternate configuration without treating his absence from any future game as decided. Preparation and prediction aren’t the same thing.

Entwistle and Gadjovich also narrow the forward options. My preference would be clear, repeatable jobs for the available depth players: support the puck, finish the defensive shift, then push play forward. Asking the bottom of the lineup to imitate the top is usually how both get scrambled.

Pabs’ read: Solve the center structure first, keep a defensive contingency ready, and don’t build this week’s plan around an unannounced return.
