Igor Shesterkin scored the first goal ever by a Rangers goalie, and Connor McDavid put up five points in a 9-7 track meet in Vancouver. In San Jose, the Panthers erased a three-goal hole, lost in overtime, and now all of Sunrise is waiting on one knee.

The games

Sharks 4, Panthers 3 (OT)

Pabs has the full recap with Maurice's postgame. Short version: Will Smith scored twice off Macklin Celebrini feeds, Eetu Luostarinen answered with two of his own, Matthew Tkachuk tied it 17 seconds after Luostarinen's second, and Luca Cagnoni won it 3:14 into overtime.

Aleksander Barkov left in the second period after his left knee buckled along the wall, and he logged 9:15.

Pabs: A 3-0 hole on the road, erased in one period, tells you what this room is made of, and none of it matters until we hear about the captain.

Lind's read: Luostarinen scored both goals in 16:28, up two and a half minutes from the opener. When the captain's minutes vanish, somebody absorbs them, and the depth absorbed them with interest.

Sully's chirp: Smith scored a shorthanded goal while Florida had the man advantage. Buddy, I'm begging you, the power play is supposed to score for your team.

Rangers 5, Lightning 1

Mika Zibanejad scored on the power play, Pavel Dorofeyev added his first as a Ranger, and Gabe Perreault tipped one in during the second. Then, with Tampa's net empty at 17:26 of the third, Shesterkin shot it in himself. He's the 18th goalie in NHL history to score, and he made 24 saves in the Garden's home opener.

Andrei Vasilevskiy stopped 20 of 24.

Sully's chirp: Nikita Kucherov scored Tampa's only goal. The goalie at the other end matched him.

Oilers 9, Canucks 7

Edmonton scored four in the first, then two shorthanded goals 34 seconds apart from McDavid and Kasperi Kapanen, and led 8-3 after two. Kevin Lankinen gave up eight on 20 shots before Leevi Meriläinen came in. Marco Rossi scored twice as Vancouver closed to 8-6, and Leon Draisaitl's second goal ended it.

McDavid had a goal and four assists, and Devon Levi won with 15 saves on 22 shots.

Lind's read: Two games against Vancouver, 13 goals allowed. The top of the lineup is producing at a ridiculous clip, and the team defense is the reason it has to.

Mammoth 6, Blackhawks 0

Dylan Guenther scored twice on the power play and four other Mammoth found the net, while Karel Vejmelka needed only 15 saves for the shutout as Utah outshot Chicago 32-15.

Sully's chirp: Fifteen shots in sixty minutes. I've seen more traffic on the Pike at 3 a.m.

Kraken 6, Flames 1

Seattle had three by the first intermission and six different scorers by the end, with Vince Dunn (a goal, two assists) and Jared McCann (three assists) driving it and Joey Daccord stopping 24 of 25.

Lind's read: Six goals, six scorers, and only one on the power play. Seattle's depth is the plan, not the backup plan.

Blue Jackets 6, Sabres 3

Matthew Knies had two goals and an assist, Charlie Coyle had three assists, and Zach Werenski logged 28:46 with two helpers as Columbus scored twice on the power play. Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen allowed five on 22 shots.

Sully's chirp: Buffalo scored three on the road and lost by three. That's the most Buffalo sentence I'll write all year.

Devils 3, Flyers 2 (OT)

Jack Hughes won it in overtime off a Jesper Bratt feed, after Luke Hughes had tied it in the third. Joseph Woll made 41 saves on 44 shots for Philadelphia, and Travis Sanheim had a goal and an assist.

Lind's read: New Jersey outshot Philadelphia 44-25 and still needed overtime. That point belongs to Woll, not the Flyers.

Wild 3, Predators 1

Nick Foligno and Blake Coleman scored in the first, and Kirill Kaprizov iced it in the third after Roman Josi had made it 2-1. Jesper Wallstedt stopped 19 of 20.

Sully's chirp: Minnesota outshot Nashville 30-20 in Nashville's barn. The Predators would like to announce they were present.

Three stars of the night

  1. Connor McDavid, EDM — a goal and four assists, one of them shorthanded.
  2. Igor Shesterkin, NYR — 24 saves, and a goal into an empty net to make Rangers history.
  3. Will Smith, SJS — two goals and an assist against Florida, one shorthanded and one on the power play.

EDGE of the night

One season-best NHL EDGE mark fell last night.

Most distance in a game: Jack Hughes, NJD, 4.7 miles.

Lind's number of the night

8. Evan Bouchard's points through two games, by our count, one more than McDavid. Two games is a tiny sample, but a defenseman out-producing McDavid is worth tracking.

Sully's take of the morning

Look, Igor Shesterkin has one more goal this season than Sam Reinhart, who has zero points through two games at 22.3 minutes a night, by our count. Only one of them is paid to stop pucks.

He said he got screened and never saw it go in. Welcome to being a forward. Hart guy, book it.

Meg's line

Wisconsin beat Boston University 7-0 in women's college hockey, and Maine edged St. Lawrence 4-3.

Tonight

Five games. The Rangers play in Detroit at 6:30 PM ET on TNT, a night after the home opener. Washington is at Carolina at 7, Boston is at Winnipeg at 8 and St. Louis is at Dallas at 9 on TNT.

The one to watch is Anaheim at Vegas at 10, because the Panthers get the Ducks on Sunday.
