Barkov Avoids Surgery, But Panthers Still Lose Six to Eight Weeks
The captain's timeline landed well short of the 10-to-12-week report that leaked out of Los Angeles over the weekend.

Six to eight weeks is the good version of this story, and Florida should take it and keep moving.
Aleksander Barkov went down in the second game of the season, October 1, and the Panthers spent five days living with every rumor the internet could generate. One report had him out 10 to 12 weeks. Another had the captain needing a second straight knee surgery.
Both were wrong. Florida confirmed Monday that Barkov will not need surgery and is expected back in six to eight weeks. The gap between those rumored numbers and the one the team actually gave out is the whole story this week.
Paul Maurice called it "our best window. Could be a little less, could be a little more." Then he put it in context: "If he hadn't been injured last year, we would've thought six to eight weeks is a long time. I think last year was six to eight months, so we're taking it."
That's not spin. Barkov missed the entire 2025-26 season after knee surgery. A captain who's skating again inside two months is the outcome the room was hoping for the moment he went down.
None of that makes the next two months easy. Barkov isn't just Florida's best player. He's the center the whole bottom six leans on to start every shift clean.
Sam Reinhart slides over from the wing to center the top line in his absence. Sam Bennett, Anton Lundell and Lars Eller hold down the other three spots. It's a deep group by most teams' standards. It is not a group built to replace a two-way center who also happens to be the best player on the roster.
Here's the read: this is a stress test for everything Florida has built the last three years, not a crisis. The Panthers have the center depth to survive six to eight weeks without their captain.
They do not have the depth to survive it and keep playing like a team that just won two Cups. Expect the power play to take the early hit — Barkov's the connective tissue on that unit. Expect Maurice to lean on matching lines rather than asking Reinhart to be something he isn't.
The timeline the team gave out Monday is the number to write down, not the ones that leaked out of Los Angeles over the weekend. Barkov targets a return somewhere around Thanksgiving. Everything the Panthers do between now and then is about staying close enough to the top of the Atlantic that his return still means something.
