Ice Breaker: 71 players on waivers, then it finally counts

No games Sunday and none tonight, so the league spent its last quiet weekend on paperwork. Seventy-one players went on waivers Sunday to get rosters down for Tuesday's opener, and eight of them were Panthers. The Room's locks for the week are in Sunday's Ferda Room.

The cutdown, Florida edition

Florida waived Cole Reinhardt, Sam Lafferty, John Beecher, Cole and Kai Schwindt, Alex Petrovic, Donovan Sebrango and Nathan Bastian. Bastian's tryout turned into a one-year, two-way deal. Bokondji Imama keeps the last fourth-line job. The Desk has the full breakdown.

Pabs: Reinhardt won the camp and lost the roster spot, and that one stings. If he clears, Charlotte gets a guy who outworked everybody. If he doesn't, somebody got a bargain on Florida's dime.

The cutdown, league edition

The names were bigger than usual for a cut day. Vegas waived Alexander Holtz and Ville Heinola, and Boston waived Henri Jokiharju. Four goalies hit the wire too: David Rittich from New Jersey, Dylan Garand from the Rangers, Laurent Brossoit from Anaheim and Vitek Vanecek from the Islanders.

Saturday's list already cost two teams. New Jersey claimed goalie Remi Poirier from Dallas, and St. Louis claimed defenseman Justin Barron from Nashville.

Lind's read: Four goalies on one day's wire means a lot of teams were carrying a third they couldn't keep. A club that's thin in net can add one today for nothing but the contract.

Sully's chirp: Winnipeg's starter won't come to work, and four free goalies just showed up on the curb. Somebody in the Jets office should at least go check the mailbox.

Lind's number of the night: 71

That's how many players went on waivers Sunday, across all 32 teams. Saturday's list had 18 names and only two got claimed, so if that rate holds, most of Sunday's group is riding a bus to the AHL by Tuesday.

Sully's take of the morning

The Bruins open at the Garden against the Rangers with a brand-new captain, and after a year of five guys sharing the letter, that's progress. Pastrnak's first order of business is reminding people Boston can score in a game that counts. On Thursday, the Flyers shut them out 2-0 in a game best remembered for a shirt.

Grade: incomplete. Buddy, I'm begging you, one goal before the wardrobe department gets involved again.

Gord's whisper

Friedman floated that San Jose may have called Winnipeg about Connor Hellebuyck, who asked out and was suspended for skipping camp. File it under Smoke. His own question was whether Hellebuyck sees the Sharks winning inside his prime, and that's the whole story.

Nothing tonight. Waiver results land this afternoon, and then it finally counts.

Tuesday's opening slate has five games: Panthers at Hurricanes at 5 p.m. ET on ESPN (game page), Canadiens at Maple Leafs at 7, Rangers at Bruins at 8 on ESPN, Canucks at Oilers at 10 and Blackhawks at Golden Knights at 10:30 on ESPN.

The one to watch is Florida in Raleigh. Carolina scored three power-play goals against Nashville on Saturday, and Florida took five minors after the first period in its finale. That math has one day to change.
