Central Division predictions: Colorado's still the class, but the fight for third just changed

The Central has a clear top two and then a fight for third that most previews are going to get wrong. Here's the order, and the call that has nothing to do with Winnipeg's goaltending and everything to do with a roster that finally has enough pieces to matter.

1. Colorado Avalanche

The best player in the division, a supporting cast that finally looks built instead of patched together, and a ceiling nobody else in the Central can touch on their best night. This is still Colorado's division to lose.

2. Dallas Stars

Deep at every position, been to the doorstep enough times to stop being surprised by the moment, and still the most complete roster behind Colorado. The gap between one and two here is real, but so is the gap between two and everyone else.

3. Utah

Here's the bold call: Utah finishes third, ahead of Winnipeg. The young pieces that were supposed to take a couple more years to gel took less time than that, and a team that was a fun story last season is a real problem this one. Write it down now so it means something in April.

4. Minnesota Wild

Steady, well-coached, and exactly good enough to make the playoffs and exactly not quite good enough to scare anybody once they're there. That's been the identity for a while and nothing here suggests it's changing.

5. St. Louis Blues

Retooled and feisty, the kind of team that makes every divisional game a grind regardless of where it sits in the standings. Not a top-tier Central club, but not an easy two points for one either.

6. Winnipeg Jets

Elite goaltending buys a team a lot of forgiveness, and it's bought this one two years of being ranked ahead of its five-on-five numbers. The math catches up eventually, and this is the year it starts to.

7. Nashville Predators

The spending was supposed to buy a contender. What it's bought so far is a roster that looks better on paper than it plays on most nights, and until that changes, the price tag is just a number.

8. Chicago Blackhawks

The best player in the division not named MacKinnon plays here, and the roster around him still isn't finished. That's not a criticism, it's a timeline — this is a team getting better in public, one year at a time.
