Tarasenko back to Florida makes hockey sense, not cap sense yet

The Panthers and Vladimir Tarasenko make hockey sense. They just don't make cap sense yet, and the gap between those two things is the whole story.

Elliotte Friedman has the two sides "eying each other" for a reunion, as relayed by The Hockey News on Friday. On Monday's FAN Hockey Show, Friedman tied the fit to Brad Marchand's timeline. That's a named insider on the record twice in a week. File under: Trade winds, with a Florida return address.

Grade: Reported. Not smoke. Friedman doesn't float names for sport, and this one lines up with everything else we know about the Panthers' calendar.

1. Why it fits

Marchand is out through October after August surgery, by Paul Maurice's own timeline. That's a month of games without a veteran winger who can play up and down the lineup.

Tarasenko is still unsigned four days before the opener. He's 34, and he scored 23 goals and 47 points in 75 games with Minnesota last season. That isn't a guy hanging on. That's a middle-six scorer nobody has paid yet.

He also knows the room. After the 2024 deadline trade from Ottawa, he had six goals and 14 points in 19 regular-season games, then five goals and nine points in 24 playoff games on the way to the Cup. You don't have to squint.

The read: the rumor is real, and the hockey fit is better than most September rumors get.

2. Why it hasn't happened

Florida is $895,714 over the $104 million ceiling with 21 players on the sheet, per PuckPedia as of Friday. Marcus has the whole sheet in this morning's Cap Check. The short version: nobody gets added without somebody leaving or Marchand's $5.25 million going on LTIR.

That's the part insiders can't report around. Bill Zito can want Tarasenko all day. The paperwork still has to clear by Tuesday night in Raleigh.

There's a hockey wrinkle too. Maurice already gave Marchand's minutes beside Anton Lundell and Eetu Luostarinen to Sandis Vilmanis, and he said it like he meant it. Tarasenko wouldn't be taking that seat. He'd be taking somebody's shifts further down, and maybe a power-play spot.

The read: if a deal comes, it's short, it's cheap, and it arrives with an LTIR move attached. If it's anything else, I'd treat it as smoke.

3. Housekeeping: Larkin's list has Florida on it

Friedman said on the 32 Thoughts podcast that Dylan Larkin is willing to go to more teams than had been reported. Florida was on the original group with Vegas, Minnesota and Dallas. Colorado, Washington and Tampa Bay are the new names. Larkin has trade protection, so he picks the list.

The read: Florida on a list and Florida as a destination are two different things. A team already over the ceiling isn't absorbing a No. 1 center's contract without sending real money back. That's Rumbling at best for the Panthers, and a better story for Washington and Colorado.

The call

Tarasenko signs somewhere before Halloween. I'll lean Florida, but only if Marchand opens on LTIR, because that's the one move that makes the math and the Friedman report agree. Watch the opening-night roster filing before Tuesday. It'll tell you before anybody reports it.
