Florida Panthers injury report: Marchand’s October rehab shapes camp
Brady Tkachuk remains day-to-day, while Jonah Gadjovich has no return date, leaving left-wing availability central to preseason decisions.

The Florida Panthers should use this week’s preseason work to build options on the left wing, not pencil in returns. Brad Marchand’s expected October rehab and Jonah Gadjovich’s indefinite absence make that the priority for the week of September 28, while Brady Tkachuk remains day-to-day.
Status board
- Brady Tkachuk (LW) — Out — Injury: Undisclosed — Timeline: estimated return Sep 28
- Jonah Gadjovich (LW) — Injured Reserve — Injury: Upper Body, Surgery — Timeline: estimated return Oct 16
- Brad Marchand (LW) — Injured Reserve — Injury: Lower Body — Timeline: estimated return Nov 1
What changed this week
- Tkachuk: The latest update, dated September 23, describes him as day-to-day with an undisclosed injury. His status remains out, with no return date announced. That’s a reason to keep lineup alternatives ready, not a reason to assume he’ll miss the same stretch as Marchand.
- Gadjovich: The September 17 update places him out indefinitely following the upper-body injury and surgery. There’s no announced return date to build around. Florida should treat his spot as an opening to evaluate other options rather than hold a preseason combination together around an expected comeback.
- Marchand: The September 17 update says he’s expected to spend October rehabbing his lower-body injury. That’s a rehab window, not a clearance date. I’d use camp to test a workable replacement combination, rather than assume the calendar will solve the problem when October ends.
- Ruutu: An errant, deflected puck struck the assistant coach during Sunday’s preseason opener, leaving him needing stitches. He was reported OK, and Florida finished the opener without a serious injury. There’s no player-lineup adjustment attached to that news; the important outcome is that he’s OK.
Lineup impact
Three left wings with three different availability pictures shouldn’t produce one blanket response. Tkachuk’s day-to-day designation calls for flexibility. Marchand’s expected rehab month and Gadjovich’s indefinite absence call for combinations that can stand on their own. I’d plan around the longer absences while keeping room to adjust for Tkachuk.
The temptation in preseason is to judge the replacement by who scores. I’d start earlier in the shift. Can that winger give the defense a clean outlet along the wall? Can he get the puck out under pressure without pulling the center too deep to support the next pass?
Those details matter when combinations change. A winger who handles that first touch can keep a line moving even before the timing clicks. Florida should value those repeatable plays over a pretty finish on an otherwise uneven night.
There’s no need to announce a permanent answer now. There is a need to give potential answers enough work together to judge them fairly. Shuffling everyone after every quiet shift won’t tell the bench much.
Pabs’ read: Build the left-wing alternatives now; let actual availability, not hopeful calendar math, decide when they’re no longer needed.
