Ice Breaker: Carolina erases 5-1, and San Jose scores 10

Eleven preseason games on a Thursday, and the best one was played in Greensboro, where Carolina trailed Nashville 5-1 in the second period and won 6-5 with three seconds left. San Jose's kids put 10 on Anaheim, and the Panthers' camp lineup beat Tampa's regulars.

The games

Panthers 5, Lightning 3

Florida dressed a lineup built for Charlotte and still beat Kucherov, Point and Vasilevskiy. Cole Reinhardt stripped Ryan McDonagh and scored the winner six seconds after Tampa tied it in the third.

Lind's read: Florida blocked 18 shots to Tampa's three and killed a 5-on-3 that ran 1:55. Reinhardt has three preseason goals, and the fourth-line math gets simpler every night.

Sully's chirp: Point, Guentzel, Kucherov and Hagel went minus-2 apiece against a bunch of camp invites, and yes, I know it's September. I'm still writing it down.

Hurricanes 6, Predators 5

Nashville led 5-1 after Jack Drury scored at 8:24 of the second. Then Jesperi Kotkaniemi, Juha Jaaska and Juuso Välimäki on the power play cut it to one. Logan Stankoven tied it at 18:36 of the third, and Felix Unger Sorum won it with three seconds left.

Sully's chirp: Nashville blew a four-goal lead while Juuse Annunen stopped 25 of 31. Grade for the Preds' second half: D.

Sharks 10, Ducks 0

San Jose scored five in the first period. Ivar Stenberg had a hat trick and an assist, Michael Misa had a goal and three assists, and Igor Chernyshov scored twice. Nedeljkovic stopped all 21 shots.

Lind's read: Stenberg, Misa and Chernyshov combined for 11 points, and Macklin Celebrini played only 10:45. That's the Sharks telling you who they want to see, not who they need to see.

Red Wings 3, Sabres 2 (OT)

Alex DeBrincat fought Trevor Kuntar 54 seconds into the third, then scored the power-play winner 33 seconds into overtime. Axel Sandin-Pellikka and Sheldon Dries scored in regulation, and Daniil Tarasov stopped 17 of 19.

Sully's chirp: A sniper drops the gloves and then ends the game, which is a beauty. Kuntar scored too, so nobody goes home mad.

Golden Knights 5, Mammoth 4 (OT)

Utah led 4-3 until Tomas Hertl tied it with 28 seconds left in regulation. Jack Eichel won it 39 seconds into overtime and finished with a goal and two assists, and Shea Theodore added three assists.

Lind's read: Vegas outshot Utah 35-21. Sebastian Cossa stopped 30 and still lost, which is the preseason in one line.

Blues 1, Blackhawks 0

Calle Rosen scored at 3:39 of the third, and that was it. Arvid Soderblom stopped 35 of 36 in the loss, while Binnington only needed 17 saves.

Sully's chirp: Chicago put 17 shots on net in 60 minutes, which is less pressure than a Sunday skate. Sacha Boisvert and Nathan Walker fought late, so somebody showed up.

Rangers 4, Devils 3 (SO)

New Jersey led 2-0 through two before Will Cuylle, Anton Blidh and Scott Morrow scored in the third. Amadeus Lombardi forced the shootout at 18:21, and Cuylle scored the only goal in it.

Lind's read: Korpisalo and Daws each stopped 20 of 23, so an even game got decided by one shooter.

Kraken 4, Flames 3 (SO)

Calgary led 3-1 after two. Brandon Montour and Ryker Evans, shorthanded, tied it in the third, and Berkly Catton won the shootout. Philipp Grubauer stopped 32 of 35.

Sully's chirp: Bobby McMann scored and fought Andreas Englund, one assist short of a Gordie Howe. Close enough for September.

Flyers 2, Bruins 0

Matvei Michkov and Cole Knuble scored, Woll stopped all 28, and Michael DiPietro stopped 26 of 28 for Boston.

Lind's read: Shots were even at 28, and Boston still didn't score. That's a finishing problem, not a goaltending one.

Blue Jackets 4, Penguins 0

Zach Werenski, Valeri Nichushkin and Danton Heinen built the lead, and Talbot stopped all 15 shots.

Sully's chirp: Fifteen shots. The Penguins' bus had more jump on the drive over.

Oilers 2, Canucks 1

Isaac Howard had a goal and an assist, Quinn Hutson scored the winner in the second, and Tristan Jarry stopped 25 of 26.

Lind's read: Howard was the league's first star, which is the right kind of noise for a young forward chasing a job.

Three stars of the night

First star: Ivar Stenberg, San Jose, three goals and an assist, the league's first star in the 10-0 win.

Second star: Logan Stankoven, Carolina, two goals, including the tying one with 1:24 left. Our pick.

Third star: Alex DeBrincat, Detroit, a fight in the third and the overtime winner. Our pick.

Lind's number of the night

Five. That's how many straight goals Carolina scored over the last 27 minutes after falling behind 5-1. The Hurricanes finished with 31 shots, and a shot-volume team gets comebacks like that when the other side stops moving the puck.

Sully's take of the morning

Look, DeBrincat is the story of the night and nobody will say it. He fought a guy in the third period of a preseason game, then won it in overtime.

Fight of the night: DeBrincat and Kuntar, and DeBrincat wins it on the scoreboard. A-plus for the Wings winger. The Bruins get a C for getting shut out by the Flyers, and that's me being generous with my own guys.

Four games: Boston at Washington at 7 p.m. ET, the Rangers at the Islanders at 7:30, Dallas at Minnesota at 8 on TNT and truTV, and Winnipeg at Colorado at 8:30. Watch Dallas and Minnesota, since Remi Poirier blanked the Wild on Wednesday.
