Around the NHL: Isles erase 3-0, Wings hang seven, Ostlund strikes twice

Ten preseason games on a Tuesday. Here's what mattered from the East and Central, with the West still skating as we hit publish.

Islanders 4, Rangers 3: three power-play goals erase a 3-0 hole

The Rangers led 3-0 at the Garden seven minutes into the second. Cole Beaudoin, Pavel Dorofeyev and Taylor Raddysh had the goals. Then the Islanders' power play took over.

Matthew Schaefer scored on the man advantage late in the second. Matias Maccelli scored twice more with the extra man in the third, the winner at 9:29. Maccelli finished with two goals and an assist, Schaefer a goal and two helpers. The Isles outshot New York 28-19.

Red Wings 7, Penguins 4: Johansson sets up four, Brandsegg-Nygard buries two

Nick Robertson opened it short-handed for Pittsburgh. Then Detroit scored seven of the next ten. Michael Brandsegg-Nygard had two, including a power-play goal in the third. Defenseman Anton Johansson picked up four assists by the league's count and took first star.

Mason Appleton and Axel Sandin-Pellikka scored 31 seconds apart in the second. Detroit killed all four Pittsburgh power plays, per Detroit Hockey Now's Max Smith. Declan Carlile picked up a roughing minor and a 10-minute misconduct three minutes into the third.

Ferda read: Crosby and Marco Kasper traded slashing minors at 3:51 of the second. Preseason or not, the kid went stick-for-stick with Sid, and the Wings won the night with their prospects doing the scoring. That's what Detroit needed to see.

Sabres 5, Blue Jackets 1: Ostlund scores twice in 28 seconds

Noah Ostlund scored at 11:54 and 12:22 of the second, both with Zach Benson assisting. Owen Power set up three goals on a night he logged more than 25 minutes with Buffalo's blue line banged up, per Sabre Noise's Brandon Croce.

Josh Norris, Conor Timmins and Tage Thompson also scored. Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen stopped all 13 shots he saw over two periods before handing it to Colten Ellis.

Ferda read: Ostlund signed an eight-year, $52.8 million extension on Sept. 14 and then scored two goals in half a minute. If Buffalo's second line is Benson and Ostlund all year, the Atlantic gets a little more crowded.

Bruins 5, Flyers 1: Eyssimont bookends it

Michael Eyssimont scored the first goal at 13:31 of the opening period and the last one at 18:47 of the third. In between, Jacob Gaucher tied it for Philadelphia. Then Morgan Geekie scored on the power play, and Brian Halonen and Elias Lindholm added even-strength goals in the third. Boston scored four unanswered after the first intermission.

Ferda read: a 1-1 game through two turned into a rout in 13 minutes. Boston's third period was a clinic in what happens when one side has NHL depth and the other side has a bus to catch.

Hurricanes 3, Panthers 2 (SO): Primeau stops everything

Cayden Primeau came on at the 30:07 mark and stopped all 20 shots he faced. He then stopped Sam Bennett and Carter Verhaeghe in the shootout. Bradly Nadeau and Felix Unger Sorum both scored on backhands to win it. We've got the full recap.

Ferda read: Florida outshot a Carolina B-team 33-26 and went 0-for-4 on the power play. That last number is the one Paul Maurice cares about.

Oilers-Jets was 1-1 with under two minutes left in the third, Alex Iafallo and Atro Leppanen with the goals. Lightning-Predators went to overtime at 2-2 after Jeffrey Viel scored twice for Tampa Bay and Matthew Wood answered twice in the third for Nashville. Canucks-Flames was scoreless midway through the second.
