Stars lock up PK ace Sam Steel for four years, $14.8 million
The 28-year-old center gets a $3.7 million cap hit through 2030-31 after a career-high 33 points last season.
The Stars signed Sam Steel to a four-year, $14.8 million extension on Monday, a $3.7 million cap hit that runs from 2027-28 through 2030-31. The 28-year-old center was set to hit unrestricted free agency next July.
The deal
Steel is in his third season in Dallas after signing there as a free agent in 2023. He set career highs last year with 12 goals, 21 assists and 33 points in 73 games, plus five game-winners, per the team's release. In 229 regular-season games as a Star he has 27 goals and 82 points.
The number Dallas values most isn't on the scoresheet. Steel has logged 450:11 of penalty-kill time as a Star, 170 minutes more than the next Star, and his 197 hits rank third on the roster, per the release.
GM Jim Nill, in the release: "His consistency during his time with our team, especially on the penalty kill, plus his versatility has made him a valuable asset to our organization."
Steel was Anaheim's first-round pick, 30th overall in 2016, and won gold with Canada at the 2018 World Juniors. He's played for the Ducks, Wild and Stars, with 175 points in 491 career games, per NHL.com.
Why it matters
The term is the revealing detail. Four years for a 28-year-old penalty-kill specialist means the Stars consider him a permanent piece of the structure, not a placeholder. They reached the Western Conference Final in both 2024 and 2025 with Steel eating the hard minutes.
The cap math is fair. $3.7 million for a center who kills penalties, wins the wall and contributes 30 points is market rate in a rising-cap environment. It's not a bargain, but it isn't the kind of contract a general manager regrets in year three either.

The Stars open the season at home against St. Louis on Oct. 2, per NHL.com. Steel will be on the first penalty-kill unit, same as always. The extension changes nothing about his October.
