Panthers hire Sweden GM Josef Boumedienne as VP of hockey ops
Florida also added a data engineer, an amateur scout from Everett and a strength coach to backfill a poached front office.
The Panthers announced four hockey operations hires on Sunday, and the big one is Josef Boumedienne, who joins as vice president of hockey operations after two seasons running Sweden's men's national team. He's joined by data engineer Josh Burke, amateur scout Brooks Christensen and strength and conditioning coach Killian Hamilton.
Who's coming in
Boumedienne, 48, was Sweden's general manager for the 2025 4 Nations Face-Off and the 2026 Olympics in Milano Cortina, per the team's release. Before that he spent a decade-plus with Columbus, joining as a European scout in 2013, rising to director of pro scouting and serving as an assistant coach in 2023-24.
He also played the game. Boumedienne logged 47 NHL games on defense with New Jersey, Tampa Bay and Washington, with four goals and 16 points, per The Hockey News. His pro career ran 17 seasons across North America and Europe and included two Liiga titles with Karpat.
Christensen arrives from the WHL's Everett Silvertips, where he was director of scouting for two seasons and won a league title last spring, per The Hockey News. Before that he was general manager of the BCHL's Salmon Arm Silverbacks.
The release didn't add background on Burke or Hamilton beyond their titles.
Why it matters
Florida lost front-office bodies this summer. Sunny Mehta left to become the Devils' general manager in April after six seasons in Sunrise, and The Hockey News notes these hires are meant to offset offseason departures. A team with back-to-back Cups on the wall gets poached. That's the tax on winning.
The Boumedienne hire is the interesting one. He's a former NHL defenseman with nine-plus years of scouting and a stint behind a bench, and he just ran a national team through a 4 Nations tournament and an Olympics. Bill Zito has built this front office on people who've seen the game from more than one chair. Boumedienne fits the mold.

Don't sleep on the data engineer line either. Mehta was Florida's analytics guy before he was anyone's GM. Replacing that brain isn't a one-person job, and hiring an engineer to keep the pipes flowing while Zito's staff resets the analytics side is the kind of unglamorous move that keeps a machine running.
Christensen is a nice get for the amateur side too. Everett just played in a Memorial Cup final, and the guy who ran that scouting department now works for a team that has to find value with the picks it has left after all the deadline deals. That's exactly where scouting matters most.
What's next
Camp is already rolling and the season opens Sept. 29 in Carolina. The new hires won't show up on a scoresheet, but the Panthers' draft table and cap sheet are where you'll see their fingerprints.
