Larkin still isn't skating and Edvinsson still isn't signed
McLellan says the captain's upper-body injury is on Mother Nature's clock while the RFA defenseman skips scrimmages waiting on a deal.
Red Wings coach Todd McLellan gave a blunt status check on his two biggest camp questions Tuesday, per The Hockey News' Michael Whitaker. Captain Dylan Larkin still hasn't skated since hurting his upper body in a gym session before camp. "Mother Nature has to take care of that; he's hurt," McLellan said.
Simon Edvinsson, the 23-year-old RFA defenseman, is doing drills but sitting out scrimmages until his contract gets done. McLellan called that "the business side." Neither plays tonight in Pittsburgh.
Interim GM Shawn Horcoff has called the Edvinsson deal a priority. MLive's Ansar Khan reported the number could land near $9-10 million a year, which would top Larkin's $8.7 million as the team's biggest cap hit.
Ferda read: Detroit opens Oct. 2 against the Rangers with its captain in the trainer's room and its second-best defenseman in a holding pattern. Edvinsson logged 22:21 a night last year. That's not a depth guy you paper over with a PTO.
